The most inspired of New Orleans R&B purveyors, The Meters were on their own and as first-call backup for singer Lee Dorsey and many other local artists produced by Allen Toussaint in the late 1960s and 197Os. This classic album, first released in 1972, captures all of their syncopated funk hoodoo: guitarist Leo Nocentelli's jazz chords scrape against Art Neville's flavorful keyboards while the truncated cross-rhythms of bassist George Porter, Jr., and drummer Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste jounce a dozen relaxed 'do your own thing" instrumentals. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993 -- From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD
